Visual Theology content is licensed for individuals, churches, ministries, and educational institutions. The license you need depends on who you are and how you plan to use the work. If your use doesn’t fit cleanly into one of the categories below, contact us — we’ll figure it out together.
Purchasing a download grants you a license to use the content under the terms below. It does not transfer ownership. Visual Theology retains full copyright.

DEFINITIONS
These terms appear throughout the licenses below. Read them once and the rest will read clearly.
Content. Any digital file purchased or downloaded from Visual Theology — graphics, posters, slide decks, handouts, curriculum, or related materials.
Internal use. Use within the walls of a single organization (one church, one classroom, one Bible study, one household). Examples: bulletin inserts, classroom handouts, internal slides, sanctuary display, small-group printouts.
Teaching handout. A loose or informally bound (stapled, three-hole-punched, paper-clipped) printed sheet produced in-house and distributed in a teaching context. Disposable in nature.
Published resource. A designed, bound, or formally produced work in which a Visual Theology graphic appears alongside substantial content from another source — additional text, other authors, editorial material, or other graphics. Examples: a book or booklet with original teaching plus a Visual Theology graphic as an illustration or appendix, a printed curriculum, a study guide written by another author, a bound conference resource. The key factor is that the graphic is embedded inside a larger work — not whether the larger work is sold, given away freely, internal to a single church, or distributed broadly. A church producing its own study booklet for its members still needs a Publication License. What matters is the composition of Visual Theology content into a larger work, not where that work circulates.
Educational institution. A school, college, university, seminary, or homeschool co-op where Content is used inside courses delivered to enrolled students.
Commercial use. Any use intended to generate revenue, including resale, on-demand merchandise, paid licensing to third parties, or for-profit products of any kind.
PERSONAL LICENSE
For individuals using Content at home for personal study, devotion, or display.
You may:
- Print up to 5 copies of any graphic in any size for personal use or to give away as gifts.
- Display the graphic digitally on personal devices.
- Share images on personal social media at a maximum of 1200 pixels wide.
You may not:
- Reproduce the Content for use within an organization, classroom, or congregation (use a Ministry or Academic License for those).
- Sell, share, or redistribute the original digital files.
- Use the Content on merchandise, prints, or any product offered for sale or trade.
MINISTRY LICENSE — SINGLE DOWNLOAD
For churches, ministries, Bible studies, homeschool co-ops, and other non-profit organizations using Content internally. This license applies to one-time digital downloads purchased from Visual Theology.
You may:
- Print up to 5 copies of the graphic in any size for display in your church, classroom, or organization.
- Print up to 500 teaching handouts of the graphic at smaller than letter size, for distribution in a teaching context. If your church or organization needs more, contact us.
- Display the graphic digitally — in presentation software, on screens, in livestream, or in your sanctuary.
- Use the graphic in online publications (web pages, blog posts, social media, email newsletters) at a maximum of 1200 pixels wide.
- Use the graphic in internal organizational materials — bulletin inserts, study guides, in-house slide decks, small-group printouts — within the limits above.
You may not:
- Include the graphic in a published resource (booklet, book, curriculum, distributed PDF) — this requires a separate Publication License, even when the resource is free.
- Sell printed copies of the graphic.
- Use the graphic on apparel, on-demand merchandise, or any physical product (a Custom License is required).
- Share, post, or distribute the original digital file.
MINISTRY LICENSE — MEMBERSHIP
For churches and organizations holding an active Visual Theology Membership. This license applies for as long as the membership is active.
You may:
- Print up to 5 copies of any single poster larger than letter size for display in your church, organization, or classroom.
- Print up to 500 teaching handouts of any graphic smaller than letter size. If your church or organization needs more, contact us.
- Print as many copies as needed of study guides and curriculum for internal teaching use.
- Display Content digitally — in presentation software, on screens, in livestream.
- Use Content in online publications at a maximum of 1200 pixels wide.
- Use Content in internal organizational materials (bulletins, slides, study guides) within the limits above.
You may not:
- Include Content in a published resource — this requires a separate Publication License.
- Sell printed copies.
- Use Content on apparel, merchandise, or for-profit products.
- Use Content as a promotional giveaway item without prior arrangement (we offer bulk discounts for this — contact us).
- Produce new prints, create new digital uses, or access the Content library after your membership ends. Your license is active only while your membership is active. Curriculum, study guides, handouts, and other teaching materials you printed during your active membership may continue to be used in your ministry — you don’t need to throw away materials already produced for a class or program.
PUBLICATION LICENSE
For inclusion of Visual Theology graphics in any published resource — a book, booklet, printed curriculum, distributed PDF, conference resource, or any designed work where a Visual Theology graphic appears alongside substantial content from another source. A Publication License is required whether the resource is sold or given away freely, distributed broadly or kept internal to a single organization. What matters is that your graphic is being composed into a larger work.
To request a quote, contact us with the following:
- A description of the resource (title, format, author, publisher).
- The graphic(s) you’d like to include and at what size on the page.
- The expected print run, or for digital resources, the expected distribution.
- Whether the resource will be sold, given away freely, or both.
Pricing is based on three factors: the medium the graphic appears in, the size of the graphic on the page, and the print or distribution run.
ACADEMIC LICENSE
For schools, colleges, universities, seminaries, and homeschool co-ops using Content inside coursework. Academic use is structurally different from ministry use — it involves enrolled students, faculty access, and ongoing course development — so it has its own licensing structure.
An Academic License has two components, which can be purchased separately or together:
Student access. Covers use of Content inside course materials reaching enrolled students — embedded in slides, course packs, e-textbook supplements, LMS pages, and quizzes. Pricing scales with the number of non-duplicated students reached annually.
Faculty access. Covers instructor use — accessing the Content library to teach, print handouts, build slide decks, and adapt graphics for in-house course materials. Priced per faculty seat annually.
To request a quote, contact us with:
- The institution and program (course names, level, enrollment).
- Number of non-duplicated students annually.
- Number of faculty or instructors who need library access.
- Which graphics or product(s) you intend to use.
- How long you plan to use the materials (per-semester, per-course, multi-year course development).
Annual licenses are renewable, and multi-year course development arrangements are available.
CONFERENCE & EVENT LICENSE
For conferences, retreats, gatherings, and one-time events that want to distribute a Visual Theology graphic to attendees — as a handout, program insert, takeaway poster, or part of a delegate packet.
Conference distribution is a category of its own. Attendees come from many churches and ministries, the print run is typically larger than internal teaching use, and the graphic functions as both teaching tool and event memento. Pricing scales with attendee count and is structured to make this accessible for ministry events while reflecting the broader reach.
To request a quote, contact us with:
- The name and host of the event.
- Expected attendance.
- Which graphic(s) you’d like to distribute and in what format (printed handout, program insert, poster, digital download for attendees).
- Event date — earlier conversations leave room for proper production.
We’re glad to discuss attribution, co-promotion, or making the graphic available digitally to attendees alongside the printed version.
CUSTOM & COMMERCIAL LICENSE
For any use that falls outside personal, ministry, publication, or academic categories — including apparel, on-demand products, branded merchandise, promotional giveaways at scale, and any for-profit application.
We can license graphics for these uses, and we can also produce custom apparel and printed goods in-house with bulk pricing. Contact us with details on what you’d like to produce, the quantity, and the intended use.
TRANSLATION LICENSE
For missionaries, pastors, and ministry workers who want to translate Visual Theology graphics into another language for use in their local context.
We love seeing this work go further than English allows, and we keep the path simple. For non-commercial ministry translations, we provide editable source files (typically Adobe Illustrator) at no cost in exchange for a signed translation agreement. The agreement allows you to translate the material and use it freely in ministry — it just can’t be sold.
A few things to know:
- The translator needs the right tools. Most graphics have text designed into the artwork itself, not laid over the top, so translation requires Adobe Illustrator, Affinity Designer, or another vector editing program. A simple text-replacement tool won’t work.
- Some books already exist in other languages. A Visual Theology Guide to the Bible and The Visual Theology Guide to the Bible Story are available in Spanish through the publisher. Before requesting a translation license, check whether your language already exists.
- Translated work cannot be sold or distributed as a published resource. If you want to print, distribute, or publish translated graphics beyond your own ministry context, that requires a separate Publication License conversation.
To request a translation license, contact us with:
- The language you want to translate into.
- Your ministry context (where you serve, who you’re reaching).
- Which graphic(s) or product(s) you’d like to translate.
- Your familiarity with vector editing software.
FREE DOWNLOADS
Free downloads from Visual Theology are licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives 4.0 International License.
You may:
- Copy and redistribute the material in any medium or format.
Under the following terms:
- You must give appropriate credit, link to the license, and indicate if changes were made.
- You may not use the material for commercial purposes.
- If you remix, transform, or build upon the material, you may not distribute the modified material.
WHAT IS NEVER PERMITTED UNDER ANY LICENSE
These restrictions apply across every license tier above:
- Reselling printed copies of Visual Theology graphics.
- Using Content for for-profit on-demand products (CafePress, Zazzle, Society6, Redbubble, Etsy, etc.) without a Custom License.
- Duplicating digital files onto secondary devices except for backup purposes.
- Sharing or selling original digital files to third parties, or posting them to file-sharing sites.
- Using graphics in posters or other items for resale, license, or distribution for profit.
